Troubleshooting
Docnest is built to stay out of your way. Now and then it does that a little too well. Find what you're seeing below.
I can't see the Docnest icon in the menu bar
The shelf works without the menu bar icon. First check that Show menu bar icon is on in Settings → Display.
If it's on and you still can't see the icon, it's probably behind the notch. On a MacBook with a notch, macOS hides menu bar icons that don't fit beside the notch. It doesn't tell you. The more menu bar apps you run, the more likely Docnest's icon ends up behind the notch.
Open Docnest another way
- Rest the pointer at the edge of the screen (the middle of the right edge of your main display, unless you changed it) to open the shelf. From there, Shelf options (…) → Settings… opens settings.
- Press ⌃⌥⌘O from any app to open the shelf. It won't work if you turned it off in Settings → Keyboard shortcuts or another app uses that shortcut.
- Open Docnest again from Finder or Spotlight, and the shelf opens.
Make room for the icon
- Quit menu bar apps you don't need, or use a menu bar manager to hide them.
- Once the Docnest icon is visible again, hold ⌘ and drag it to the right. Icons near the right end are the last to be hidden.
- On macOS 26, check that Docnest is allowed in System Settings → Menu Bar.
New documents don't appear
Work through these in order.
- Was the file created after you installed Docnest? Docnest only collects files written after it was installed. Older files aren't added to review.
- Is the format turned on? Documents, plans and images are on by default. PDFs, code and other formats aren't. Check Settings → Collecting → Formats. Files in a format that's off appear on the shelf as Suggested to collect, where you can choose Collect.
- Is the AI tool connected? Tools such as Cursor and Windsurf need Connect in Settings → Connections & integrations. A tool marked Needs attention or Connection unverified may need to be reconnected. See Supported AI tools.
- Was the file written to a temporary folder? Documents in temporary folders such as
/tmparen't collected by default. Choose Collect when the shelf suggests them, or turn on Also collect AI documents in temporary folders in Settings → Collecting. Either way, you can read them inside the agent conversation. - Run the collection test. In Settings → Collecting → Test document collection, click Run test next to Create test document. Docnest writes a Markdown file with two revisions into your first project folder. If it shows up, Docnest is working and the problem is in the AI tool's setup.
Documents show the wrong AI, or "unknown"
Docnest can tell which AI wrote a document only when it can read the session records. Turn on Collect from agent session records in Settings → Collecting → How Docnest collects. Documents collected from project folders alone show an estimated or unknown source.
The Conversations tab is grayed out
Turn on Show agent conversations in Settings → Agent conversations, and allow record reading. See Agent conversations.
Permission prompts
Docnest only asks for what a feature needs.
| macOS asks about | When | Where to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Files and folders (Desktop, Documents, iCloud Drive, external drives) | Your projects live in a protected folder | System Settings → Privacy & Security → Files and Folders |
| Notifications | You click Request permission in Settings → Notifications & sounds | Settings → Notifications & sounds → System Settings |
| Automation (Terminal, iTerm and others) | You open a session in its terminal; Docnest selects the right tab | System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation |
| Downloads folder | You turn on Downloads AI inbox | System Settings → Privacy & Security → Files and Folders |
| Login items | You turn on Launch at login | System Settings → General → Login Items |
If you clicked Don’t Allow by mistake, turn Docnest back on in the place listed, then quit and reopen Docnest.
The shelf opens when I don't want it to
- Turn off Expand for new documents (Notifications & sounds) to get a small cue instead.
- Check that Reduce auto-expansion while working (General) is on. It is by default, and it keeps the shelf closed while Codex, Claude or Cursor is in front.
- Turn on Hide in full screen (General).
- Increase the Open on hover delay (Display).
Still stuck?
- Open Settings → Advanced → Diagnostics and click Copy diagnostics. The text covers connection status and counts. It never includes document contents, conversations, tokens, raw session IDs or credentials.
- Report a bug and paste the diagnostics, or email us.
